another project on the go. needed a truck to run garbage to the dump, so one of those cars i rescued a few weeks ago went under the knife.
needs a few minor things. all the parts i have been sourcing from my stockpile/stash/hoard of parts.
so far-
replaced-
a non-working fuel pump, put a used tank/pump in. (thats most likely why they parked it 14 years ago...)
clutch cable (missing) battery cable (missing). dash buttons missing/not working (headlight / wiper switches)
cv axle (torn boot). headlamp bulbs (poor connections, upgraded to led)
front struts. rear struts. ignition switch and door locks. they all had keys broken off in them!
window regulator drivers side. need to check pass side, its really stiff.
both door panels. door hinge on drivers side is shot.
oil &filter change, syncromesh in the transmission. spark plugs from a different engine (ngk)
160,150,150 compression. good enough to get to the dump and back.
needs plug wires. strut helper springs in the rear-1 inch of lift!
all of the parts (except for the helper springs) came out of my boxes of parts.
so far i'm into the car for $26 for the helper springs. next comes the steel for the back wall.

 I don't know why it posted the same pic 3 times instead of just once.....my fat fingers.....

I will ''rhino guard'' the ''box'' area.
then the wife said ''rhino guard the whole damn car-get it in the same color and be done with it''
hmmm.....orange peel finish, but on purpose!
that would seal all the weld seams for the back wall/roof
put in two pipes from the heater core, run straight water in the rad, portable hot tub!
''sorry, I need 2 hours run time to reach bathing temperature''-how far away are you?

I am using whatever I have on hand to build this car, but I may have to buy steel for the back wall. I have 1'' sq tubing for the ''roll cage'' (bus seat frames, with pre-bent 90* sections) and very proficient with a mig welder.
was also thinking of a snowplow on the front for winter.

I saw a Suburban painted like that at a gas station. They used it off road and said it worked great at protecting the body from scratches. A dimpled surface will increase fuel economy :D . Throw a hydraulic pump in the back and mount a riding mower snow blower on the front. I think you can get them as wide as the car.

That is a nice use of an old car.
Really good idea to use the rhino guard for your use.
Keep up the nice work 8-)

a sheet of 16 ga steel is $76, 4'x8'. they do have 5'x8' sheets, but no price on those...

checked last night, the pass side window regulator is worn out as well. out to a parts car to find a decent one.

needs a radio of some sorts, someone tried pulling out the factory one and all the knobs are missing, and they broke the face of the radio as well  I don't see why someone would want a factory am/fm radio
I have a few old cd players in a box somewhere......
will use the roof skin to make patches to weld over the rear pillars and roof sections where I cut the roof off.
noticed it needs a drivers side seatbelt-its badly frayed. this car will be registered and insured, completely road legal.
not sure if I want to run 12'', 13'' or 14'' tires on this one.

I have blue seat belts avaiiable

thanks for the offer for the seatbelts. i'll dig thru my parts bins to see what I have first. I have 15 bins or more of Suzuki parts.....
every time i strip a car, it goes into bins labelled with the model/year. 8-)
i have owned 20+ over the years, currently have 13 in the stable, stripped 6 or 7 into boxes......
but never enough turbo/gti parts

If you don't have any I'll deliver too, just for the day trip. N/C for everything.

then onto the dash-what a mess!IMG_1621.JPG
I HATE those connectors- in my mind they are COMPLETLY TEMPORARY until a permanent repair is made. they were even used on the cig lighter as well! :o
repaired cig lighter wiring.
installed a jvc stereo. fixed that wiring shit show
installed '95+ door lamp switches.
replaced dome lamp housing.
installed dash bezel.
replaced cup holder ''slide-out'' in console. drilled out factory hole beside cup holder for another power point. installed socket, just need to run wiring for that.
my son pulled the drivers fender, we tried adjusting the hinges but the pins and bushings are completely shot. will look for replacement pins/bushings for those. will do both sides. my son also replaced the pass door window regulator.
wife and i spent some time staring at it, trying to figure out extra lights/ third brake light, as well as a window for the back wall...i could use the back glass from an '86 i have, but its almost too big- the bottom of the glass would be to low, i dont want to risk breaking it if i throw stuff in the back

so I ordered axle seals, cv boots. had to replenish my stock-pile anyways.
I will re-boot the original axle from the car, and put a new seal in as well. the original axle wasn't leaking at the trans, the used one I put in now leaks. it looks like the one I put in isn't in as far as it was in the other transmission- but it is firmly seated, the circlip did engage properly, but it is sloppy in the transmission.

no luck locally for hinge pins or bushings- all the wrong sizes. found some on e-bay that should fit, ordered a set, now hurry up and wait. when they arrive I will try install, and report back with the install.

its around $500 for the rhino guard spray. tint-able in any color.

found a window for the back wall at the local wreckers out of a school bus! $10 ! it must have been an omen, there was a stripped metallic blue mk 2 parked behind the bus that I got the window from! I only glanced at the car; no motor or trans,no tach, full of random junk, good taillights. (red/amber)
that bus was so rusted out-I simply pulled down on the glass and seal and it fell into my hands.

tried re-booting the original cv out of the car- I have never had one fight me like that to come apart, I finally beat the shit out of it until the whole unit was completely junk. I was having a shitty day and something needed to pay for it.

it usually takes me 30 minutes to reboot an axle. this one fought me to the bitter end, damaged my brass drift and chisel, chewed up my large ball peen hammer and small sledge hammer.

after beating on it I took it out of the vise, threw it out the door of my shop, sat down and had a smoke.
sometimes shit isn't meant to be.

at least I got boots and seals. might try a new seal in the trans and put axle back in, hope it doesn't leak.
oh, and I need dust seals for the hub end...

I got some more seals yesterday- so last night I installed a new hub seal- murdered the first one... :( grab the next new seal, fought with it trying not to wreck it-cuz I didn't have anymore seals....it finally went in (after some curse words and filing down the edges of the seal) went to my Suzuki parts cabinet for something else, found 3 more hub seals.....
so, I cleaned up the axle to put it back in, that's when I noticed the damage on the control arm.... there is a nasty bend and twist in the control arm....like the forks on a loader hit it....
went upstairs, found a control arm in great shape with a very tight ball-joint 8-)
sprayed all the nuts and bolts for easier removal.
then did more measuring for the steel rear wall. looks like its going to be 4 pieces of steel, in order to match the body lines  if I would have cut the roof off 3 more inches past the door, it could have been done in one or two pieces. :x

picked up a sheet of 5'x8' 16 gauge steel for $104. now to make cardboard templates, transfer to the steel, and use the plasma cutter to make shapes! 8-)
but need to finish that front suspension/ axle first. got more seals and another cv boot.
I opened the box for the boot, it was the wrong boot in the box-it was for a honda- they gladly retuned it for the proper one, and refunded my money. I have been dealing with the same parts place for 20+ years, they treat me well.

need to do some work on my daily driver.leaking fuel filler pipe, clunk in front-end, needs more spring height in the rear (saggy springs)

changed out the damaged control armIMG_1622.JPG
then installed a good used one, and put it all back together

IMG_1624.JPG

topped up the trans oil, took it for a drive, left it in the shop overnight, no leaks! 8-)
removed all the interior except for the dash-need to do some rust repair on the drivers side floor board/rocker sill area.
then started on the cardboard templates for the back wall, but got called away to help my brother put cv axles in his dodge minivan. what a shit show that was!

holy frick its been hot these last few days-by the time I get home I just want a shower, food and sleep. so not much getting done.

but I did find more coil over shock helper springs at princess auto! bought both pairs. 8-)

may have to put new struts in the rear of ''russell'' one of the used ones I swapped in doesn't work so good.
