What did you do to your Swift today

That happend to me one time too.
It was also a broken diff. pin.
Ever since I do replace them. When doing the the gearbox. Never found a broken pin after that. But still.

I did not know you could clean up the clutch disk.
Great that you can replace the gearbox in 2 hours!
Ceep up wrenching

changed oil n filter in one.
kid has a low brake fluid level in his- will have to inspect the brake system. i do have some new parts on hand, if needed...

IMG_2568.JPG
the brakes on the kids metro- drums look the same. yup, those are shot, and the slave cylinders were both leaking, as well one of the adjusters has stripped teeth-so would not hold proper adjustment-
i had new wheel cylinders and shoes on hand- but not drums-
kid went out to a parts car and found a nice set of evenly worn brake shoes and drums- brake shoes within 1 mm of being new-!!!
removed the old parts from his car, cleaned up the backing plates, install new wheel cylinders and the parts taken from the parts car- then bleed brakes/ flush brake system-
he went for a test drive, brakes are 110% better- all 4 are doing there job !
IMG_2567.JPGIMG_2569.JPGIMG_2570.JPG
i am impressed how clean these drums are. managed to re-use parts, that would otherwise get thrown out- and yes, i made sure all the used parts were still within spec to be re-used.
then installed winter wheels and tires.

son installed his old brakes and drums onto the parts car, so it could still be moved if need be. they are marked with large red 'x' so we know those are garbage-

then did a brake flush on the '92 that i am driving- its been a few years since the brakes have been serviced/ inspected , other than looking at the pads when swapping tires-IMG_2571.JPG

thats the brake fluid i removed from the system -like black coffee- high % of moisture on my tester....

all flushed out with fresh synthetic fluid. cleaned the master cylinder with fresh fluid and a syringe, sucking out the garbage at the bottom of the master cylinder instead of pushing that thru the lines when we bleed the brakes.

all ready for another season of driving.

did a brake flush on the blu92 metro- brakes didnt feel right after the flush-found a BROKEN slave cylinder on the pass rear brake assembly.

the casting broke where the bleed screw / main line goes into the slave- have pics but not atm
looks like the casting had a crack for awhile-

remove old slave, install new slave, bleed brakes, much better.

need to order more parts.

noticed a lose headlamp as well- one of the ball stud mounts for the headlamp backed out of the headlamp- and the headlamp was flopping around...
tightened the stud as much as possible, but headlamp removal will be needed for proper repair.

kid changed oil n filter in his daily driver- doesnt use much oil this engine, but its getting tired, but still returns 50+mpg
also changed the air filter- minimal blow-by oil on the inside of the housing-
9 months and the kid has put on 35,xxx km +
damn these cars have been good to me and saved my family lots of $$$$$$$$

i have a list of items to repair , on vehicles and house- so i have taken my vacation days during the christmas season/ new years
debating about re-building another engine to have on hand. i have nib 40 over pistons and rings-

other than oil changes and gas nothing much more.

overheated the engine in the back-up car...its down on power and fuel economy now, but that could also be due to the winter blend of gas....

kid hit the ditch, blinding snowstorm.
pulled him out, no damage to the car but his ego....

oh yeah install winter tires they say- i find almost 0% difference in winter tires. brand new ones on his car, and traction is still terrible.

Lost year I went to Norway for a small road trip.
The locals use Nordic tyres with studs.
To me it looked like they had grip on the icy and snowy road.
Where I was sliding with my brand new Europe style winter tyres.
I do not know if they are availible.
And are legal where you live?
Just for a litlle information.

Winter tires are legal in Canada, and are required by law in several places. Winter tires are recommended when ambient temperatures are below 7 degrees centigrade. Studs are legal too but mostly recommended for icy conditions.

studded tires are a joke.
i worked in the tire industry for 20+ years.
ran studded tire on my cars- no difference in traction, just more road noise- tried the hype, noticed no difference.
drove MANY TIMES across the mountain ranges in blizzards snowstorms snow squalls you name it
ON ALL SEASON TIRES
never once hit the ditch or mountain
but now the government makes money aka ''FINES / TICKETS '' if you dont have ''snowflake'' rated tires , either installed at a certain date, OR removed by a certain date-
semi trucks can go thru the mountains on all seasons....? so they have chains, big deal? i can get chains for any of my vehicles.

another angle of big brother controlling your life.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE DRIVER !!

has anyone seen what the grifter import drivers are running for tires? bald as a babies ass. and they do ride share as well. danger in any capacity, the flip flops being on the roads.

Busy last few days. Get one road ready, and in the process of removing and collecting parts from 2 others for a powertrain swap in 1 car, transmission swap in another car.

Red vert will be put into service, but there is a list of repairs- but runs and drives decent. has not been taken apart or molested like some verts-

silver 4 door donated the auto transmission that i need. the engine does run on all 3, but EATS oil. another 1.0 n/a core...possible good cyl head.

The white vert donated the driveline for 2 other cars- the engine for the blue metro back-up driver, and the transmission for my son's car , that currently has no 3rd gear synchro.
This engine has great compression on 2 holes, leak-down confirms bad valve on 3rd hole.

SO PLANS ARE-
swap head from my metro onto white vert engine block. mine runs on all 3 but is very tired. also using too much oil.
that would give me a decent 1.0.
Transmission donated from the silver 4 door car will go into my metro .It was my sons car, it ran and drove, but used more engine oil than mine... body has terminal cancer.
No point in replacing a transmission , when the engine is tired. do one and done, back-up car will be restored to back up duty-
swap trans in kids car maybe next weekend-

i also have a few other irons in the fire...

got the engine/trans removed on the metro.

IMG_2632.JPG
grabbed some more parts, head from the metro did have a burnt valve after all-
IMG_2633.JPG
i had a loose head from a advance emission '94 that had a crooked bluetooth connecting rod
IMG_1828.JPG
head was dirty from being out in the bus. cleaned away carbon EASILY with crc gasket remover.
then let sit up side down overnight with seafoam in the bowls. should remove the remainder of the carbon, and see if the valves hold...IMG_2633.JPG
