I have intermittent rough idle,
exhaust pipe fluttering noises.
Paper bill sucks into tail pipe.

40psi lower compression on middle cylinder.

150psi on outside cylinders.

No oil consumption noticed.

I think next step would be to do a leak down test?

Thinking possibly lifter issue?
Maybe burnt valve?

Thanks

turbo engine, or n/a? low numbers , even at 150 for a n/a car-the one hole with 40 is a dead giveaway (no pun intended, ha ha ) that some internal work needs to be done. leak-down test is needed, to help verify if its a burnt valve, or rings-
i would say worn rings on the two at 150, and a bad valve on the 40 psi cylinder

i have had the lifters in one engine create weird compression results as well- they would pump up hard, not bleed down, and i had very little compression across all 3 holes…but i could not get consistent #s, almost all zeros at one test, then 50 or so, then one would be 110-
pulled the lifters, popped them apart, cleaned them out, engine runs ok, for being at rebuild specs- below the minimum 0f 156.5… (150 per hole)

Is there a preferred head gasket to use?

i use fel-pro, dont worry about the hole size in the gasket , like everyone else does….every t3 engine i have opened up has had the small hole head gasket.
but get good re-useable bolts. i bought 4 sets from mike when he was cleaning out his parts-now down to 2 sets…the bolts and washers can be bought from a bolt supply shop as well…

This engine has upgraded Allen headed bolts.
Going to grab a leak down tester.

I’ll wait to open it up before ordering rings.

I will struggle to find the time for this repair but I must not give up on it yet. There’s plenty of life left in this car.

Lifters can be serviced by dis-assembly and cleaning. If there is no excess lash/noise there is no problem with them.

i soaked some stiff lifters in gunk parts cleaner-worked really well.

they pop apart really easy, to clean the small inner passages. soaked the lifters overnight, then blown out with compressed air, then assembled using atf, or engine oil….
use a flat edge/ square to check them for wear, across the top.

there are two different looking lifters, they both do the same job, but the parts are not interchangeable between them.
